Why Monterey

One of California's most complete incentive destinations.

The Monterey Peninsula sits at the edge of the Pacific, three hours south of San Francisco and two hours from the Bay Area's corporate centers. The Portola Hotel and Monterey Conference Center together form the Central Coast's largest convention complex — 60,000+ square feet of meeting space that can handle groups up to 1,000.

Inland, Carmel Valley runs 15–18°F warmer than the coast and stays clear of fog year-round. Carmel Valley Ranch and Bernardus Lodge anchor the executive retreat market there — all-suite properties on hundreds of private acres with on-site golf, spa, and vineyard access.

For golf-forward incentive programs, the peninsula offers more championship-caliber public and resort courses than any comparable California destination. Trident blocks tee times at Bayonet & Black Horse, Carmel Valley Ranch, Pacific Grove Golf Links, Laguna Seca Golf Ranch, and Poppy Hills as part of a fully managed program.

What Trident runs
in Monterey.

Convention & conference

The Portola / Monterey Conference Center complex handles up to 1,000 attendees. Trident manages hotel room blocks, ground transportation from major regional airports, F&B coordination, and on-site staffing across the full convention cycle.

Incentive travel

The Monterey Peninsula is one of California's premier incentive destinations. Trident builds programs around championship golf, coastal experiences, Carmel Valley wine tours, and Monterey Bay Aquarium private buyouts.

Executive retreat

Carmel Valley Ranch and Bernardus Lodge are purpose-built for small executive groups. Trident programs the full stay — activities, F&B, transportation, and on-site coordination — under one contract.

Golf programming

Trident coordinates group tee-time blocks at all of Monterey's premier golf courses, with access to some lesser-known private facilities as well. Pre-round registration and event coordination, on-site execution and support, and transportation between lodging property and courses are available as desired for simplicity and convenience.

Team building

Monterey Bay kayaking, Carmel Valley wine tours, chef dinners at coastal venues, whale watching charters, and scavenger hunts through Carmel-by-the-Sea. Trident handles permits, vendors, and logistics.

Multi-destination program

Monterey pairs naturally with San Francisco (2 hrs north) or Las Vegas (1 hr flight). Trident manages the full West Coast corridor under one contract, one transportation operator, one point of contact.

Common questions
What airports serve the Monterey Peninsula?

Monterey Regional Airport (MRY) is 10–20 minutes from most venues, with nonstop service from LAX, SFO, PHX, DEN, DFW, SAN, and SEA. San Jose (SJC) is ~75 minutes by road; San Francisco (SFO) is ~2 hours. Trident manages transfers from all three under one contract.

What is the largest meeting space in Monterey?

The Portola Hotel & Spa combined with the adjacent Monterey Conference Center offers 60,000+ sq ft of indoor space plus nearly 60,000 sq ft of outdoor event space — the Central Coast's largest convention complex.

When should we avoid Monterey for corporate programs?

Mid-August. Car Week and the Concours d'Elegance close Bayonet and Black Horse golf for several days and spike hotel rates across the peninsula. Outside of that window, the destination is open and well-priced year-round.

Can Trident manage golf programs in Monterey?

Yes. Trident coordinates group tee-time blocks at championship courses including Bayonet & Black Horse, Carmel Valley Ranch, Pacific Grove Golf Links, Laguna Seca Golf Ranch, Poppy Hills, and The Club at Pasadera. Transportation between courses is included.

How does Carmel Valley differ from Monterey for events?

Carmel Valley sits inland, away from the coastal marine layer — it runs 15–18°F warmer and is typically clear even when Monterey is fogged in. Carmel Valley Ranch and Bernardus Lodge are the primary event properties there, suited to smaller incentive groups and executive retreats.
